RISING FUEL COSTS POINTS TO HIGHER UTILITY BILLS

In the war against higher fuel prices, AABC can help you fight back in more ways than one. Our army of Little Red Trucks is on the front lines to keep your utility bills at a minimum while keeping your comfort level at a maximum. Here are some steps you can take to keep your cool over skyrocketing utility bills.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Sometimes, if you want to save money, you’ve got to spend money. That has never been truer than when it comes to air conditioning units. That’s because usually, the more efficient the unit, the more it cost initially. However, the more efficient, more expensive unit will actually save you money over time since it requires less fuel to cool your home. Cooling efficiency for air conditioners is indicated by a SEER rating. The SEER rating tells you how efficiently a unit uses electricity: the higher the number, the greater the efficiency. The typical SEER rating of units manufactured prior to 1992 is about 6.0. In 1992, the government established a minimum cooling efficiency standard for units installed in new homes at 10.0 SEER. High efficiency units have a rating of at least 12.0 SEER or above.

Some air conditioners have additional features that provide greater comfort. Two-speed units can run on low-speed (using about 50% of the energy) 80% of the time. Consequently, they use fewer on/off cycles and produce fewer drafts and much smaller temperature swings.

SHRINK YOUR ENERGY BILLS

More than 20 years have passed since the first oil crisis gave Americans an indelible lesson in energy deprivation. Yet many homeowners still don’t realize how much energy seeps out of their homes every day despite the steps they might have taken. According to experts, many homes – including new ones – act more like sieves than like sealed buildings. Here are some easy steps you can take that can add up to significant energy and money savings.

COOLING SYSTEMS

Since nearly half of your utility bill is for heating and cooling, you can save a great deal of money over time by taking any or all of these energy-saving action steps:
  • Consider replacing air conditioners that are more than eight years old.
  • Install new equipment on the north side of your home, if possible.
  • Set your thermostat as high as is comfortable.
  • Clean or replace the air filter every month or two.
  • Plant trees or shrubs to shade the air conditioning unit, but not to block air flow.
  • Remove debris from the area around the condensing unit.
  • Install a ceiling fan, attic fan, and automatic or programmable thermostats.
  • Have your cooling equipment serviced by a professional technician every year or two.

INSULATION

You can cut insulation upgrade costs by as much as 10% by planning your retrofit in late winter or early spring (off-season). The money you'll save after improving your insulation will vary depending on how well insulated your home is at present and your fuel rate.

WINDOWS

Using less energy will always save you money. Buying energy-efficient windows will save you money, brighten your home, and bring other benefits. By weatherizing your windows, there are many quick and inexpensive ways to save energy and money:
  • Caulking gaps around the frames.
  • Weather-stripping the sashes.
  • Adding window shades and coverings.

DUCTWORK

Working with a trained professional will help maximize your home's energy efficiency, while improving air quality and reducing safety concerns. Follow these tips to save money in the process:
  • If ducts are located in the basement, insulate walls first.
  • Reconnect ducts that have fallen away from one another.
  • Repair visible holes and seal joints with silicone caulking or cement with mastic.
  • Do not use duct tape for longer-term repairs.
  • Identify and repair blind alley ducts.
  • Check for inadequate duct work.
  • Make a rough sketch of your system, beginning with your central heating unit.
  • Locate and clean the filter in the central fan unit or return register.
  • Hire a trained professional to check pressure balances.
  • Insulate ducts in attics and unconditioned spaces first.
